West Springfield Little League Challenger Baseball Program

The West Springfield Little League Challenger Baseball Program is an offshoot of Little League Baseball for children ages 5 through 18 with physical and mental disabilities.

This Challenger program started in 1993 with nine children and one team. It has grown to 250 children and sixteen teams with a majors division for the older youth. These sixteen teams represent high schools in Northern Virginia.

These high schools' female softball and male junior varsity and varsity baseball players; Members of The American Legion Post 176, Auxiliary, and the Sons of The American Legion; and the Challenger parents, family, and friends have been "on the field" Buddies for the Challenger players.

In 1997, the Post 176 Legion family raised over $4,000 for the program after designating the Challenger program to be the focus of fund-raising efforts through the VISIONS program.

The Challenger Baseball program not only participates in the spring of each year but currently has a fall season for the program. The West Springfield Little League Challengers also participate in the Eastern Regional Challenger Baseball Tournament, annually held in May in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The tournament usually draws Challengers from several states.
